The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee held a grand opening to commemorate the new state-of-the-art Chemistry Building on campus. The aging Chemistry Building was beyond useful life and a new building was needed to provide an ideal learning experience and serve students pursuing degrees in healthcare and other STEM related fields requiring more advanced learning environments.
The new 163,400 square foot, four-story building can accommodate approximately 5,000 students who take chemistry and biochemistry classes each year. The building design is structured to resemble protein and lattice structures like those found in chemistry research. Modern lab spaces are intentionally separated by breakout zones and the building features classrooms, lecture halls, offices and both formal and informal collaboration spaces. These spaces offer flexibility and adaptability to support teaching and research innovation and connect researchers, students, and the community through science. Glass walls are featured throughout the building to encourage collaboration and create transparency.
“The chemical industry is the fifth-largest manufacturing sector in Wisconsin and UWM graduates are vital to that industry. This building will not only enhance the learning experience for our students, but it will also fill the state’s talent pipeline and bolster our research capabilities, contributing to significant scientific advances,” said Chancellor Mark Mone.
