The 2021 Mayor’s Design Awards were held on June 7, 2021 and we are pleased to announce that two Kahler Slater projects were honored with awards. The Mayor’s Design Awards are an annual tradition to recognize design excellence throughout the City of Milwaukee. Projects are selected for adding value to their neighborhoods by restoring, constructing, or enhancing their properties in a way that respects the urban fabric and contributes to the character of their surroundings. The 2021 awards were broken into five categories: Filled-In, Spaces and Places, Small Gems, Test of Time, and Design That Grabs You.
The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Bradley Symphony Center was honored in the Test of Time category. This category recognized projects that have added value to the City of Milwaukee by restoring or reusing their properties in a way that preserves and enhances the character of their neighborhood or reinforces the traditional neighborhood fabric. The projects in this category help to preserve the city’s built environment and architectural legacy for future generations. In Mayor Barrett’s remarks he said, “the Bradley Symphony Center is one of the real crown jewels for this year’s award. It is nothing short of spectacular and unbelievable.”
The BMO Tower received an award in the Design that Grabs You category. This category highlights projects which have made exciting and important contributions to the urban environment by respecting the context of their surroundings, while raising the bar for major development and contemporary architecture in the City of Milwaukee. “The new modern office tower is worthy of its prominent location. It adds to the economic base of the city and reinforces the vibrancy of the public realm at the city’s heart,” said Mayor Barrett.
