SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin is a growing 410-bed, tertiary hospital and ambulatory care center, hired Kahler Slater to develop a long-term master plan to meet their development needs and address their century-old downtown campus. Kahler Slater designed major expansions for both inpatient and ambulatory care, with a goal of providing the latest technology in an efficient chassis, creating a Cardiac Center of Excellence and a better procedural services experience for patients as well as physicians.
In addition to a 240,000-square foot patient tower over a new surgical and diagnostics platform, with a total of 34 new operating rooms and 40 new private prep/recovery rooms, Kahler Slater also completed planning and architectural design for the 195,000-square foot Outpatient Center for St. Mary’s Dean Ventures (a partnership between St. Mary’s Hospital and Dean Health System). Collaborating to create a new ambulatory services facility on the same campus, the for-profit venture built the Outpatient Care Center, a four-story addition that integrates hospital-based physician practices, provides ambulatory diagnostics and enhances physician productivity as well as patient convenience.
Services include the Center for Digestive Disorders and Ambulatory Surgery and Care Center, housing 23-hour overnight-stay patients. Physician offices for hospital-based proceduralists are connected by a skybridge to their inpatients and procedural areas in the hospital. The lowest level houses ambulatory imaging services, including MRI, CT, cardiac diagnostics and ultrasound. A pharmacy and retail services, as well as an attached parking structure, complete the facility offerings. The University of Wisconsin’s Family Practice Residency program is also housed on this campus.
