Kahler Slater partnered with the Village of Sussex to design a new Civic Center to help address the needs of the growing community as well as the existing aging facilities. The new Civic Center brings together three previously separate Village buildings into one: the Village Hall, the Youth Hall and the Community Center. The design intentionally integrates glass, stone, and brick to fit visually into the surrounding neighborhood while evoking a modern design to serve the community for decades to come.
The 53,000 square foot center includes gathering spaces and community rooms for the Senior Center and the Village’s recreation programs, such as fitness and children’s arts and crafts. Fitness spaces and recreation areas were intentionally designed to integrate natural light and create welcoming environments for a variety of programs - including yoga, Zumba, pickle ball, barre classes. Offices for Outreach Services, the Chamber of Commerce and the Historical Society are also included in the program as well as a Library.
Outdoor areas provide spaces for health, wellness, and community activities, such as a weekly Farmer's Market and holiday events. A green roof and outdoor terrace are available for staff and the community to enjoy.
